International Day of Older People: Staying Active at Every Age

Every year on the first of October, we mark International Day of Older People, a moment to celebrate the contribution of older generations and reflect on how we can support healthy, independent ageing. As a physiotherapist, this day always reminds me how much difference the right movement and care can make to quality of life in later years. Ageing does not have to mean giving up the activities you love.
Why Movement Matters More As We Age
Physical activity remains one of the most powerful tools for healthy ageing, yet it is often the first thing to be reduced as people grow older. Regular movement helps maintain muscle strength, bone density, balance and cardiovascular health, all of which naturally decline without use. Staying active also supports mental wellbeing, cognitive function and independence, allowing older adults to continue managing daily tasks such as climbing stairs, carrying shopping or simply getting up from a chair with ease.
Common Challenges Faced By Older Adults
In clinic, I regularly see older patients dealing with joint stiffness, reduced balance, muscle weakness and a growing fear of falling. These challenges can create a cycle where discomfort leads to reduced activity, which in turn accelerates further decline. Conditions such as osteoarthritis, osteoporosis and general deconditioning are common, but they are rarely a reason to stop moving altogether. With the right guidance, most of these issues can be managed effectively and safely.
How Physiotherapy Supports Healthy Ageing
A tailored physiotherapy programme can make a significant difference at any stage of later life. Assessment typically looks at strength, balance, flexibility and gait, identifying specific areas that may increase the risk of falls or limit daily function. From there, exercises are introduced gradually, focusing on building confidence as much as physical capacity. Simple interventions such as targeted strengthening, balance training and education on safe movement can dramatically reduce fall risk and help older adults remain active participants in their own lives.
Celebrating Independence Through Care
International Day of Older People is a valuable reminder that ageing well is about more than simply adding years to life. It is about maintaining the freedom to move, socialise and take part in activities that bring meaning and joy. With appropriate support, older adults can continue gardening, walking, playing with grandchildren or travelling well into later life. Physiotherapy plays an important role in making this possible, helping people stay strong, steady and confident as they age.
